How to Choose a Website Developer in Salem: 10 Questions to Ask

Ten practical questions to ask before hiring a website developer in Salem or Elampillai — plus the warning signs to watch for and what to do after you choose.

By Shastik Digital Solutions ·

Choosing who builds your website is a bigger decision than the price suggests. The right developer gives you a site that brings in enquiries for years; the wrong one can leave you with a slow site you can’t change, or a domain you don’t even own.

Whether you’re a shop in Elampillai or a clinic, school or manufacturer in Salem, these questions will help you compare developers — including us — on what actually matters.

Before you contact anyone

Spend ten minutes writing down:

  • What you want the website to do: bring in calls, take bookings, sell products, or simply look professional.
  • The pages you think you need, such as one for each service or product range.
  • Who will provide photos and text.
  • Your budget, and whether you also want help getting found on Google.

This makes quotes easier to compare, and a good developer will ask about all of it anyway. Our guide to website costs in Salem and Elampillai explains how these choices affect the price.

10 questions to ask

  1. Can I see live websites you’ve built? Open them on your phone. Are they fast? Is it easy to call or send a message? Mock-ups and screenshots are no substitute for real, working sites.
  2. Exactly what is included for the price? Ask for the pages and features in writing.
  3. Who owns the domain and the website? The domain should be registered in your business’s name, and you should own the finished site once you’ve paid.
  4. What will it cost each year after launch? Domain renewal, hosting and any maintenance should be explained up front.
  5. How will it work on mobile? Most local customers will visit on a phone. Ask how the site is designed and tested for small screens.
  6. What do you do for SEO? At minimum: a unique title and description for every page, sensible headings, a sitemap and fast loading. Be wary of vague answers.
  7. How do I request changes after launch, and what do they cost?
  8. Can I see the site before it goes live? You should review it on a preview link and approve it.
  9. How will we communicate? Phone, WhatsApp, email or meetings — and how quickly can you expect replies?
  10. What happens if I want to move to another developer later? A good developer will make sure you can.

Warning signs

  • “Guaranteed #1 on Google.” No one controls Google’s rankings. Promises like this usually mean shortcuts that can get a site penalised.
  • No written scope. If the pages and features aren’t written down, disagreements are likely later.
  • The domain registered in the developer’s name. This can make it hard to leave.
  • No live examples. Or examples that are slow and awkward on a phone.
  • Unclear yearly charges that only appear after launch.

Does a local developer matter?

Much of website work happens over phone and WhatsApp, so a developer doesn’t have to be next door. But working with someone who knows the Elampillai and Salem market has practical advantages: they understand how local customers search, what nearby competitors are doing, and the festive and seasonal patterns that matter for your business. Meeting in person is also easier when a conversation needs it.

If local search matters to you, ask how they would help you appear in Google Maps results — see our local SEO checklist for what a good answer covers.

After you choose

  • Get the scope, price, timeline and payment terms in writing.
  • Prepare your photos, logo and text early — delays in content are the most common cause of slow projects.
  • Test the preview on your own phone before you approve it.
  • Once it’s live, make sure it’s connected to Google Search Console and your Google Business Profile.
